Badgers to travel to Providence for 2023 Gavitt Games

MADISON, Wis. — Following a year off in the 2023 annual Gavitt Tip-Off Games, which pits the Big Ten Conference against the Big East Conference, Wisconsin is back in the field for the 2023-24 season. Per CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, the Badgers will travel to Providence this winter for another key non-conference clash.

The Friars are coming off a 21-12 season including a trip to the 2023 NCAA Tournament. Providence earned an 11-seed, but fell to 6-seed Kentucky in the Round of 64. The Friars will have a different look next season, replacing former head coach Ed Cooley, who departed for Georgetown, with Kim English, who comes over by way of George Mason. Providence has reached the Big Dance in each of the last two seasons and returns leading scorer Bryce Hopkins (15.8 ppg).

UW is 0-1 all-time against the Friars. The two schools met in the 2021-22 Gavitt Games. Providence came away with a 63-58 win in Madison, a game in which Badgers’ star guard and eventual lottery pick Johnny Davis did not compete due to a foot injury.

UW will be looking to improve its 1-3 all-time record in the Gavitt Games, which is currently tied for the worst mark in the league. The Badgers’ lone win came in 2018 during a road victory at No. 15 Xavier. The contest at Providence will be the fourth road contest in five career Gavitt Game appearances.

The Friars are the next opponent in what’s shaping up to be a loaded non-conference schedule for the Badgers. On Monday, UW also announced a home-and-home series beginning with Arizona in 2023-24. The first game will be played in Tuscon in December.

Head coach Greg Gard has already scheduled a home game against Tennessee (Nov. 10) and a trip to the Rocket Mortgage Fort Meyers Tip-Off (Nov. 20-22), which features Southern Methodist University, Virginia, and West Virginia in the field.

All that doesn’t include the team’s annual rivalry matchup with Marquette, which will take place at the Kohl Center this season.

The official announcement and tip-off times/dates for the Gavitt Games are TBD.
